Hello! I am a board-certified orthopaedic physical therapist in St. Louis, MO. I was persuaded to start this blog by a few patients who have had hip surgeries. I myself was diagnosed with femoroacetabular impingement in 2008. As a result, I have had several surgical procedures - bilateral open hip surgical dislocations with acetabular rim trimming, osteochondroplasty of the head-neck junction with labral repair and screw removal.
During my personal rehabilitation, I keep detailed journals of my recovery. My weight bearing status and progression of exercises was different for each surgery. I utilized the most effective strategies from each surgery to create the protocols. My hope is that patients can achieve maximal functional outcomes utilizing my protocols as a guide. I created protocols for both the patient and the physical therapist. These protocols are included in this blog.
As my blog continues to develop, I will review existing protocols and provide my insight. Also, I will evaluate current research articles to answer clinical questions to support evidence-based practice. This blog is intended to provide general information regarding pre- and post-operative hip rehabilitation for a myriad of hip conditions. I hope that physical therapists who have not yet had the opportunity to treat individuals following correction of femoroacetabular impingement can benefit from the protocol. Also, I hope that this blog can serve as a resource to those who have hip pain and are considering surgical intervention.
